Legitimate Concerns of the White Working Class

A few days ago, I went to a restaurant with a friend and after the meal we stopped off at a supermarket for some essentials. My date said he’d pop in quickly whilst I smoked my cigarette. Stood at the entrance I noticed a heap on the floor to my right, a young lad maybe no more than 18 with ginger hair and circles under his eyes – malnourished was the word that immediately popped to mind. I dug around in the bottom of my bag for loose change and found £1.70 in coins which I handed to him. It was a particularly blustery evening and his sleeping bag seemed inadequate, the air felt cold and sharp with the coming rain. It wasn’t right that he would have to endure a night like this. I asked him if he had anywhere warm to go and he said he just needed another fiver before he could make that happen.

Now I know some homeless shelters are free. I get that. I understand sometimes it’s not safe for people to stay at these shelters because they are vulnerable and the needs of all service users must be considered. He may have been talking about a cheap hotel, it really didn’t make a difference to me, I pulled out a fiver and handed it over. I said, “I really don’t care where you spend it, honestly, just that you need it and I can give it” and he seemed panicked as though he desperately needed me to believe him when he said it was going towards shelter. I suddenly felt sheepish, in trying to reassure him I’d actually made him paranoid, no doubt because this a conversation he has several times a day, and has had to defend himself against these cruel judgments.

To make things less awkward I decided to go into the store and track my friend down. We met in the queue for the till, there being one customer before us and so I proceeded to tell him about what had just happened. I wasn’t talking loud enough for anyone else to hear, I thought, yet the cashier, an older woman perhaps in her 60s, with a tattoo on her neck that resembled a port wine stain in the shape of a badly drawn daisy, suddenly barked at me “how much did you give him?” My response was equally abrupt, “nothing” I said, confused as to why this woman was inserting herself into my private conversation given that she was still serving the customer in front of us and we most definitely did not invite the interruption. Nonetheless she proceeded to tell me what a mug I was for giving this kid some pocket change, rolling off a bunch of other times customers had given him money including a chap who’d won £120 on a scratch card and she said he’d only go and spend it on drugs.

“GOOD!” I exclaimed, much to her annoyance. “Do you know how cold it is out there? If I can help someone find something that will make the cold night air a bit more bearable, even if it is just drugs, then I’ve done my part. In an ideal world, that kid wouldn’t be on the streets, we’d look after him.”

She didn’t seem pleased at this and started rambling about how he gets into a jeep with some lads and makes at least £50-60 a day and people like me were just encouraging this deception and suddenly the older white man in front of me in the queue pipes up about Brexit and how “it’s a good job we’ve finally left the union” not looking up from his shopping once, brave white knight that he was. My friend and I looked at each other like, what the fuck is going on, we’ve somehow got ourselves embroiled in an argument with Bigots for a Bastard Britain. I knew what Bashful Brave White Man meant, Brexit meant Pakis Out and soon enough there would be no Pakis around to give poor white kids money on the streets, or that once the Pakis were gone, the poor white kids on the street would have jobs and wouldn’t need to beg or something racist, at least, I know this much from his nonsensical interjection and entitlement to my time and efforts. We didn’t validate his pointless contribution with a response, he paid for his groceries and fucked off.

Ratty Old White Lady, seemingly hesitant to accept she had no right to tell me what to do with my money, continued to whinge about nothing until I stopped her and said “there are billionaires in the world hoarding money, the kind of wealth you clearly have no clue about or else you wouldn’t spend your days begrudging a teenager pennies, comparatively speaking, but you won’t challenge them, because you’re twisted and you don’t feel like you’re living unless you’re suffering. They’re laughing at you, and so they should, you haven’t got the first clue” and with this we paid for our things and left the store.

My friend and I seethed all the way home, analysing every little thing that was said before I launched into a diatribe on the state of the white British working class. As a born and bred Britisher, there are, unfortunately, members of my family I could describe in the same way, those who’ve brought into the protestant work ethic and live to work, but suffering is crucial for it to be considered worthy. You can’t do something you enjoy or anything that requires little effort on your part, that’s cheating. My friend is white British middle class and said that he could never say what I had just said because it would sound completely different, my point being, “the white working class is keen to point out how hard they work for the right to call themselves decent hard working folk but I cannot think of any other demographic so lazy and immature in its thinking.”

As a daughter of immigrants, my grandfather was a foreman for British Steel, my father a car mechanic (his work unit in the grounds of a council estate) I am completely wedded to this statement and couldn’t be more justified. I am justified in its application because I have come to detest the double standards and bullshit emanating from the general direction of the supposedly native and legitimately concerned white working class the establishment overlords wheel out to excuse their racist and inhumane policies against other working class people on rainy fascist island. I wish I’d said to badly drawn port wine daisy tattoo lady she was the mug for working at Asda for her £50-60 a day when young homeless lad knew to appeal to those who have more. I wish I’d called Brexit Bigot out when I’d had the chance and told him to jog on.

Stop making excuses for horrible people, I reckon. Stop legitimising their hateful creed, there is nothing virtuous about doing a job that pays you peanuts whilst lining the fat cat’s pockets with your blood sweat and tears. You don’t get a medal for keeping in line, that’s a myth. Stop being such an insufferable serf. Wake the fuck up and acknowledge this life you have as being more precious than the value some narcissist with a trust fund places on it.

Stop being so damn white and undeservedly proud of monstrous attitudes.

Remember the Holocaust, punch Nazis

Today marks the 17th Holocaust Memorial Commemoration Day. It reminds us of the date the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz was liberated by the soviet union in 1945. We also remember the victims of subsequent genocides; Bosnia, Rwanda, Darfur. It comes as a timely reminder of just how close we are yet again to experiencing a similar fate, if certain forces are allowed to continue spreading hateful propaganda.

With so many genocides behind us, you’d think we’d know by now how to prevent one. It seems easy enough to me, failed states look for scapegoats; whether Jews, Muslims, trans, disabled or LGBT, already marginalised groups are easy targets, because they have no way of defending themselves against a system that begrudgingly allows them to exist.

It seems obvious to anyone who is willing to sign their name to the truth; neo Nazism has risen off the back of a white supremacist agenda, promulgated by people/organisations we thought we could trust (like the BBC). The instinct to protect humanity is chipped away at by the state and media, gradually, drip feeding the message that all of society’s ills can be attributed to this group, unlike us, that has failed to do x. In times of economic crisis, failed states and their leaders crank up the propaganda machine to distract us from their deficiency, so we are not baying for their blood and demanding our dues but killing each other, conveniently letting our toffee nosed overlords off the hook.

How can we in good conscience honour the victims of genocides past when we seem to be teetering on the brink of another, nefariously intimated by the same individuals espousing liberal platitudes such as ‘Never Again’?

‘Beware Hate Speech, says Auschwitz Holocaust survivor’ is a featured story on the BBC website. There are also segments on Newsround such as ‘Holocaust Memorial; what can we learn?’ Yet it wasn’t so long ago the internet was aghast at the BBC for their promotion of real live fascists like Farage who was given more airtime in the run up to the general election than all the other leaders combined. You might have caught the swastika tattooed Nazi on the news who went by unchallenged by BBC presenters when he suggested the swastika was not in fact racist. The BBC likes to claim its non partisan stance reflects its programming but in refusing to label Nazis they have failed in this respect. By downplaying the Nazi, they have chosen the Nazi.

The execrable minimisation of genocidal white supremacy by your faves has enabled a 21st century descent into fascism, yet still there are those who claim to uphold liberal values whilst ushering in this kinder, gentler attitude towards Nazis. Nazis just need to be shown some humanity, allegedly, to stop behaving like Nazis. You absolutely must not punch a nazi or you’re as bad as those who slaughtered 11 million people in the name of white pride. If you’re the sort of person who has even a shred of empathy/sympathy for Nazis, you might be a nazi too, or at the very least a white supremacist. When I think of Nazis, I don’t stop at a punch, Nazis are for the wall. Y’see I understand Nazis don’t even think of me as human, just medical waste. I knew as a child Nazis would have come for me, it made learning about the holocaust shockingly real and painful.

I guess this could go some way to explain the dissonance of those who mark memorial days yet platform Nazis in their newspapers and magazines. Fascism won’t ever directly impact on Nazi collaborators, they’re white by and large, middle class too if they’re journalists and academics. A bunch of these folks were fine othering Muslim people or trans people and denying it would lead to fascism but now that it is here, they’re down for punching Nazis. Dissonance or naivete, I can never tell but it might have helped stall things had they believed us.

If we read enough we know historically Nazis respond only to violence, rather it is the only thing that can stop them dead in their tracks. Nazis are cowards, they are opportunists, they thrive only because liberals legitimise their extremism, they claim to be moderates yet turn away refugees and make distinctions between good and bad immigrants, Europeans and non Europeans, Muslims and Jews. Nazis do love to divide rule and conquer so we must respond with solidarity, whether it personally impacts on us or not. When they other even one of us, we must fight back together as a whole. Othering is a white supremacist tool used to justify dehumanisation then genocide, it has no place in a civilised society. It is bullying to speak of other identities whilst excluding them from the discussion, protesting this fact does not make the protester a bully but a revolutionary.

The world is in need of a therapist, to show us all the incongruence of our words against our actions, and the good grace to admit our deepest faults, in the belief we can all be forgiven if we uphold the truth.

In our post truth, fake news world, I despair.

How to prevent genocide

Whether or not you believed survivors of pre Brexit British Values one thing is for certain, most people have witnessed now the consequences of state propaganda and wilful apathy towards people who are not like us. Being a seat of power in the enlightened west doesn’t protect us from the greedy man and his pursuit for coercive power and control, it merely delays the inevitable. It makes it easier even. For years the British press and various personalities on Twitter have denied the persecution of British minorities with the excuse that debate is a pillar of any civilised society, conveniently excluding said minorities from sharing their experiences. To make matters worse they depicted a scenario where they were being bullied and oppressed by minorities for protesting the ways in which they were being misrepresented (the free speech demonstration attended by Namazie and Tatchell springs to mind). This is called propaganda. It is a tactic used by powerful aggressors to incite divisions in order to take the spotlight off their inhumane behaviour. Most Britons happily fell for it.

Then Brexit happened and Polish people were targeted. Foreign white NHS staff were threatened with lists. An Irish woman was told she needed to provide additional identification because she was a foreign national, her fear and outrage both palpable and oddly familiar. It’s impossible for me not to feel just a smidgen of bitterness towards these people. Who will speak up for you now they have come for you, when you didn’t speak up for all the others? Marmite has had more support in this one day than Britain’s minorities have had since the Tories seized power. This misanthropy will come back 10 fold on the citizens of rainy fascist island. We’re seeing the first shockwaves from our devalued currency; Unilever has withdrawn its products from Tesco’s shelves because the latter refused to increase prices. What kind of evil corporate entity rushes to capitalise on the misfortunes of the poorest in society? Capitalism is murder, by default, it squeezes the life out of those at the bottom, starves them to death.

Perhaps now you will look to this model without sneering. The 8 stages of genocide are laid out to remind us we have been here before, but there are strategies to prevent or halt this jaunt down fascism street. Still, I will break it down so there is no confusion.

CLASSIFICATION – Categorising Asian people, all of them, as pakis and therefore Muslims has enabled violence against British Asians ranging in colour from beige to dark brown, whether Muslim, Sikh or Hindu and non believers like myself. Islamophobia, openly encouraged on public platforms from national treasures like Richard Dawkins, David Starkey, Katie Hopkins etc should have been widely condemned by their peers when they said it was not racist to criticise Islam. The west has conflated the people of the Asian subcontinent with Islam > Arabs > Taliban > Al Qaeda > Terrorism, they have racialised a belief system as they did with Jewish people pre Holocaust, who were as varied in their origins. The media could have played a part in informing society of the differences in people, that the actions of one do not reflect millions of others and should have condemned the practice of collective punishment instead of surreptitiously fanning the flames.

SYMBOLISATION – The west has long held a grudge against the visible differences we have with each other. Their stance is not only that they disapprove of other cultures but that other cultures must bow to superior western values on most things. The burqa is considered the ultimate symbol of oppression to enlightened westerners who never thought to question BBC narratives. This item of clothing is now a beacon to racists everywhere who cannot appreciate the irony of beating on women they believe need saving. To the women who choose to wear it it has become a two finger salute to those who would seek to control them. Bottom line, we must always condemn the practice of controlling the rights of women to freely express their beliefs. The rights of women to wear whatever the hell they want – no exceptions. That some feminists from the middle class white arena object to the clothes other women wear is a sign that maybe their feminism isn’t inclusive at all and maybe isn’t even feminism at all but white supremacy.

Immigrants fare no better in a system that seeks to control how we view people. At the beginning of this year, asylum seeking residents in the North East of England feared they were being marked out for easy identification when G4S, notorious contractors noted for their human rights abuses, painted their doors red which had already led to abuse from local communities. Actions such as these must come as a shock to all, contractors must lose their contracts for engaging in this dangerous activity. We have the power to hold them legally responsible, we can ban hate symbols and speech if they lead to criminal activity, as it has many times before.

DEHUMANISATION – People have a natural aversion to the taking of life, it’s all a bit close to home UNLESS you dehumanise targets so they do not trigger the instinct to protect. If you label them vermin, parasites they become easier to dispose of. These processes take years. Katie Hopkins should be legally held to account for the ways in which she has dehumanised people fleeing wars we created. People like Trump need to be held accountable by the international community, not allowed a platform from which to spew his hateful diatribe, never mind stand for president.

If you do not condemn hate at every juncture, if you think it has nothing to do with you, you’re wrong, we’re all connected. Denying one person, one group their humanity has a knock on effect throughout society, especially if done in the public eye. Precedents are set. It is better to suffocate narratives which dehumanise even one, we’re simply not evolved enough to hold it there.

The British government must be held to account for the ways in which it herds non nationals like cattle and tortures them, including pregnant women, at centres like Yarlswood. The UN must do a better job of fulfilling its original purpose, that is to implement human systems and incarcerate those who seek to degrade humanity. Prevention rather than cure was the intention and yet we are still waiting.

Broadcasters have a responsibility here too. Stop pushing far right narratives, BBC. Stop glorifying empire and supporting Nigel Farage. Similarly print journalists have their part in subtly reinforcing their desire for white supremacy, language that only refers to the white working class and asks for a Farage of The Left must be highlighted and ridiculed, if not criminalised. 21st century fascists have amended their behaviour so you cannot instantly mark them out as a racist/fascist. The commentariat may not use racial slurs but they do a brilliant job of gatekeeping and subliminal propaganda, or microaggressions.

ORGANISATION – Hate groups like Britain First must be proscribed. With the state hesitant to do this they encouraged it to propagate and proliferate. This way when the far right attacks, the British government can pretend it is innocent of any atrocities. Jo Cox, a serving MP was murdered in broad daylight by someone espousing Britain First ideology during his frenzied attack. In the months that have followed we have learnt of her inclusivity and her heart. She was targeted for these, because she believed our shared humanity unites us.

The far right have been organising and mobilising since the death of Lee Rigby when the state and media propaganda painted a situation that called for drastic action. Yougov polls excluded British poc, the PM called on Cobra, it was framed as an unprecedented attack even though it was the second of its kind in his lifetime. Our numbers were abysmally low for the counter demonstrations against hate marches the far right imposed on our towns and cities, the length and breadth of Britain, even when we begged and pleaded with those who do have the power to change things to make their support known.

The cops, media, politicians and far right have a symbiotic relationship. If even one of these were to properly stand against hate the whole hellish system would collapse.
It should concern us all that our failed state is such a prolific supplier of arms to war torn nations. Where is the UN and its arms embargo of nations engaging in genocide? Must we experience the genocide first in order to qualify?

isbritracist

POLARISATION – Anyone who promotes this idea of ‘us’ and ‘them’, people like Katie Hopkins and those who state they merely wish to take care of British workers first are choosing to exploit the idea that it is not racist to put white people first. In a poll I conducted this past week, 25% of people answered no when asked if Britain was racist. Despite the murders, propaganda, the significant increases in attacks following media lies a large number of Brits believe Britain is not racist. They’re just defending their loot, even if it means considering other human beings as less worthy of resources (that were stolen from them most likely). This earth is not just for white people, it belongs to us all. There is no us and them, only the greedy bastards accustomed to evading responsibility for their own murderous actions, happy to let you die for them.

PREPARATION – At the recent Tory party conference in Birmingham the PM reinforced the usual racism but home secretary Amber Rudd took it one step further. In a move that would suddenly jolt slumbering Brits into action, she called for companies to draw up lists of their foreign workers. Non British LSE academics were informed by government representatives their input was no longer required. Suddenly the majority of people could no longer ignore the cow bells heralding in fascism, not when their French, German, Spanish etc workers lives were under threat of expulsion. This, my dears, has been the harsh reality for Britain’s Asian population since 9/11. Our lives have been scrutinised, we exist only at their behest, and the world has largely allowed it. My gran, rest her soul, came to this country in the 60s and she never let go of the fear they would get rid of us once we’d served our purpose. This inhumanity has been extended to Europeans and no one likes it, nor should they. Such a blatant attack on those we don’t usually target is a worrying sign the establishment don’t give a shit.

“At this stage a genocide emergency must be declared”.

Whilst methods differ and we cannot always be sure who they’re coming for next, we cannot deny the British government has allowed for its own citizens to be picked off by the state because they no longer qualify for additional support. People are dying from starvation in Great Britain, 1000s have perished when their mental, physical needs were denied. If we are to judge a country on the way it treats the most vulnerable, international condemnation should rain hard on this fascist island.

EXTERMINATION – If we’ve reach this stage, I’m not sure there’s anything else I can add other than fuck you, Britain and fuck you, world. In the words of my favourite communist sister “I hope the exit is  joyful quick and I hope never to return.”

DENIAL – The thing about fascists is they’re ultimately cowards, strong as a mob, weak and pathetic on their own. They never admit to their involvement even if they were the sole judge jury and executioner. Many would rather die at their own hand than ever be captured by the opposition and held to account. These stages of genocide are not static, there isn’t only one way this can go. Sometimes genocide is quick and over before you even know it began, other times it is a long and arduous process, frustrating because of the way denial plays a huge part. People will use slurs then say those slurs are not racist and the majority will go with that. It is the majority that call outcomes, the fence sitters, the anti intellectuals who are happy to take your word because you share certain identifiers. It is the intelligentsia who control the majority, through their newspapers and radio slots, prime time news on the telly. Ours are mostly bigoted white supremacists and it’s their fault we are discussing genocide in this day and age. They are neoliberals who cannot distinguish between far right thugs and antifa or empathise with the women and children they bomb in Syria. They must take back all their words and publicly condemn this government, not hold it up as feminist or revolutionary in any way.

UPDATE: It’s been brought to my attention this model has been revised. It now includes 2 further stages; DISCRIMINATION and PERSECUTION. No doubt amended to accurately reflect 21st century methods of fascism. I particularly commend the author’s stance on the words ‘counter terrorism’.

JK Rowling and the Order of the British Empire

In this capitalist world where celebrity is everything, endorsements from the rich and famous can win or lose an election. Part of the reason Brexit was such a shambles was the utterly confusing mix of ‘idealist’ lefties and unapologetic bigots all on the same side. This is not to say I believe Galloway is an idealist or even a leftie for that matter but he says he is (even though I had some trouble reconciling this idea with the images of him sharing a platform with Nigel Farage). Whatever the leftie Brexiters thought they were doing, they weren’t prepared for the violent backlash against anyone deemed not English enough and in the weeks that followed there were some heartfelt retractions and apologies. Turns out if you ally with right wing fascists you only lend credence to their cause.

Perhaps this is why people like JK Rowling believe hard left and hard right are one in the same; they saw some of them mingling together for good ol’ Blighty and imagined the need for independence was unifying, they can work together so long as they kick back at the uber state. Personally I couldn’t understand how anyone could claim to be left yet relish the idea of having a national identity, separate from the rest of Europe because we are Englanders and we should be proud of such greatness. Nothing leftie about that if you ask me. Nationalism is not socialism but I can see why it could be so confusing for so many, this theory that the far left and the far right come together like a horse shoe. I can see why people would think in this way but I have to add, it is a bit of a reach and sounds like the opinion of people who repeat truisms parrot fashion. It sounds like the brain fart of someone who has never attended a counter demo against a far right rally for if they had they would know that the far right are always the first to attack and it is on the far left to defend. The far left resort to violence because it has been proven through history fascists only respond to this kind of protest; you can ask them nicely to leave and see where that gets you.

Far right knuckle-heads repeatedly threaten communities where the population is majority non white. Far left comrades; black, white, brown, Jews, Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Atheists, LGBTQ, disabled and many others defend these communities because we know an attack on one group is an attack on us all. Do not tar these very distinct groups with the same brush, JK and friends, it only magnifies your political ignorance and detachment from reality.

Neoliberals, Blairites, Red Tories etc would like for us to accept this idea they know what’s best for us, even though they haven’t the slightest interest in what makes us who we are. I want to talk about JK Rowling specifically because she was presented as their ace card – surely no one would dare question the almighty creator of Hogwarts, they assumed. With such a huge following I guess they thought we’d listen to her. Well, actually, a bunch of us were going to notice JK making false equivalencies between antifascists and fascists especially when she has a track record of ignoring minority voices pleading with her to honour their cultural practices and not misappropriate native ideas. This white lady with immense privilege routinely blocks brown people for saying she is stealing their culture and not compensating them for it. Heck, she isn’t even acknowledging it. It does feel suspicious doesn’t it, when we say it out loud and join the dots? A white lady picking and choosing how she would like to represent ethnic minorities, ignoring their protests at being misrepresented, hinting at the fact they and their supporters are just as bad as the white supremacists who would have us all wiped out.. It’s not just me, is it?

sturdyalex

Couple this with the fact that Blairites seem to glaze over whenever you bring up the Iraq war and the devastatingly harrowing legacy we left behind, choosing instead to vote for more bombs then gushing sycophantically about how much richer they got under Blair.. We cannot lay claim to greatness as an island until the war criminal has been held to account. We cannot claim to be a democracy when up to 2 million people were silenced when they marched to Stop the War. We cannot turn our backs when generations of Iraqi children are condemned.

When racists mock non whites for having a chip on their shoulder, for rinsing their oppression dry with the excuse “it was all a very long time ago and I wasn’t there, don’t blame me” they are choosing to ignore the ways in which non white cultures are still being carved up for mass consumption, rewarding the Columbusing white purveyor whilst various ethnic majorities struggle to ensure our basic survival. All she had to do was listen and come to an agreement with the people she is using to propel her successes; to give back what she took from them, in a manner befitting the native tradition. She actively chooses to ignore them. It’s why I had to interject when I saw JK conversing with an old time hero of mine, Sanjeev Bhaskar, in response to a Twitter user asking how he felt about JK supporting racist Blairites. His response was in earnest but coupled with the subsequent tweet from JK it presented Sanjeev in the light of a token brown person, his testament erasing the many voices who feel JK has profited from our ideas and stifled debate from the very people it concerns. Kudos to Sanjeev, I appreciated his frank replies to me, and the exchange prompted me to write this post, something I have been avoiding this past week, partly due to the inevitable white knighting from scary dudebros if they chance upon it but also because it would be ignorant of me to leave out the bit where I admonish the usual suspects for their erasure of the important points being made here. Of course Helen Lewis and Laurie Penny were going to circle jerk their support for this beloved children’s author of whom we’re all just jealous, for being so smart and original. The same faces who’ve systematically erased and silenced poc protesting erasure and silencing have propped each other up to the exclusion of everyone who is not rich, white and not famous.

They can’t have Sanjeev Bhaskar, not when already they have Panju.

An Open Letter: To the racist next door (well, upstairs)

We haven’t met yet, I tend to avoid the stairwells at home time, in fact most of the time because I rarely go out but I frequently hear you come home after a relatively short day at work. The landlord says you’re a teacher and this was meant to prove your suitability for the flat above me, the walls are thin and I knew the last couple far too intimately, although I hadn’t met them either. Whilst it’s true there haven’t yet been any all night raves as yet, I am getting used to the drone of your very boring self important expressions. I don’t think this is your natural speaking voice but an affectation of what a teacher should sound like. You sound very male and very entitled even when I can’t make out the words, you frequently talk over your guests. When you’re not enunciating for the whole street you’re belting out Lloyd Webber classics for Britain First’s Got No Talent so it’s fair to say you like all the attention being you gets.

It is with this growing irritation that I peeked out of the peep hole when I heard your voice bellow loudly as you trudged up the stairs this afternoon. I caught the back of your head, looks like you don’t have any hair, and you seemed as tall as the door to the next floor. A shorter man with brown skin followed behind. He didn’t pique my interest as much as the words you were saying to him though. You said “whilst women in India are oppressed at least they get an education. In Pakistan they don’t even have that.”

Oh really? I’m even more pumped to meet you now, can’t wait to look at all your photos of Pakistan and hear about your best and worst adventures. Of course as an educator of future generations I assume you must have the information to make a statement so matter of factly, so I’m going to believe you when you say anything, otherwise why would you? Unless say, you were just repeating a thing you’d always heard and just assumed to be true because you’re a thickheaded arrogant racist (cos white supremacy runs deep even with the ones who don’t appear outwardly fascistic) and why should you care about whether things are factual or not, it’s not like due process is a thing poc even understand in their own corrupt countries so why would they expect it here, or something?

In my large family most of the graduates are women. My grandparents had a focus on educating the girls because they wanted us to be independent and not reliant on a husband who could do with us as he pleased. They saw education as freedom from patriarchy, which certainly confused me growing up being as my family weren’t lacking on the patriarch front. I think it was a latent desire to keep “our women” free from the clutches of western patriarchy, to increase our value as women in the western world where we are seen as servile and disposable. This attitude was prevalent in the community I come from. These were the poorest of Pakistanis and many married their girls off young but the suitors were always turned away at the door for us and my aunts. “They’re too busy with their studies” was the blanket response my gran had for anyone suggesting we were ripe. This remained the case forever, at least with regards to myself. I’m still unmarried, in my 30s, and still learning, at my own pace.

This isn’t the first time a person in a position of power has espoused dangerously problematic opinions with regards to the natives of my fledgling motherland. Another teacher, older than the racist upstairs and also a devout Christian asked me once whether it was true there was a whole village of imbeciles somewhere in Pakistan, where the IQ was nominally the lowest in the whole world. I didn’t even know what to say to that.

This kind of jarring ignorance has become commonplace in the wasteland of post recession Tory Britain, it’s breathtaking because it was not the norm for me, at least not growing up in my multicultural town with my multicultural friends and teachers. It was perhaps always there but cleverly disguised because at one time people believed in power of laws which forbid racism, I know I did. The various authorities inadequate response to racism has allowed for that attitude to seep into wider society because the racists know the cops are on their side. Whiteness trumps justice. In fact racism is condoned by the people occupying seats of power at the very top, for example when they call Cobra to deal with an unprecedented death of a white soldier on British soil even though that sentence is untrue in its entirety.

I have come to conclude there is no right or wrong in society only power and control, that is to say I believe there is a moral compass and most certainly a version of life exists for some where doing the right thing is the noblest and happiest way to live but for the majority of people it really is about what you can get away with in any given situation. These opinions white people have, where they deny the humanity of others and speak of them as aliens without any direct experience of the people in question is a narrative that is centuries old. Racism is most prevalent in the UK in the areas where there are actually no people of colour, so when you’re trying to reason with a fascist that they are wrong about all Muslims, you may as well be speaking to a shit brick wall. There is no reasoning with those who are devoid of reason, education, experience yet exist in a suit of white skin that elevates them to a state of enlightenment where they can make damaging untruthful statements about other humans without batting an eyelid or challenge.

They’re teachers and I left school at 16 so they’re right and I’m wrong, or at least that’s the version some of you allow yourselves to believe.

Chelsea racists are a distraction from a much bigger problem

Another racist attack on a public transport system, another furore over the state of football today; except everyone seems to be ignoring the great big white elephant riding around on the circle line 7 days a week, 365 days of the year (despite the many ways in which we tell you it’s happening every hour of every day on Twitter, where you can all see it at any time).

Life as a person of colour living in a white world is hard (especially if you are a woman and battling sexism as well). We do not have the freedom/privilege to exist; we must navigate our days with much introspection and safety planning, so that we avoid bringing violence on ourselves. Already this is sounding like victim blaming and that’s because it is, our media and governments routinely advise victims on how to play it safe never once suggesting to the perpetrators they should stop or else face the long arm of the law (whether victims of race or rape). This is why it hurts more to see white people dominate a hashtag with their tales of shock at the state of football today, or their calls for action to ensure this never happens again.

damaging ramifications

(damaging ramifications for football but white people ok to continue being racist)

It happened to me 2yrs ago and that was the last time I boarded a bus in the night. In fact shortly after that, with the increasing fascist demos and racist discourse from our rich and famous (google India Knight for the P word and Jeremy Clarkson for the N word, Dawkins for his Islamophobia and Cobra for their double standards) I stopped going out altogether. I may have some passing privilege in some parts of the UK but on the whole I’m not willing to take that risk or bother playing white identity bingo when I am freaking the fuck out already. What flavour of racist is this, I wonder? The sort that’ll forgive me my skin tone if I make enough shared cultural references? Or the sort that thinks all Tamils are Pakis, white being supreme? Any white face in a crowd could be capable of stabbing you, even as you absentmindedly do your food shop on a Sunday. They can shout white power at you as the life drains away and the propaganda channel won’t even call it terrorism! Just theories, attacks on people of colour, not actual lived experiences we’ve been trying to tell you about. Never mind that the white leftie press routinely shuts down any objection to their increasingly right wing ‘discussions’ on our lives (by shamelessly labelling it silencing), we are not permitted to even begin telling you our experiences of our mother’s cultures because we’re being forced to accept the white supremacist’s account of it. All it takes is one token person of colour to disprove your entire life story.

What do we, as people of colour, have to say about racism in the west? It’s rampant and escalating (because we feign shock and surprise at the odd incident, it’s left to propagate whilst we focus on ISIS, or forced marriage, or FGM, which in turn confirms the racism they already feel). The politicians and media have made it so, with their not so subtle manipulation of other white people they usually hate and look down upon. Surreal, huh? Laughable almost.  That’s white supremacy though, completely ignorant of the reality for the majority world.

Stop being shocked, white people, and start paying attention to us. Speaking for myself, I am not about to do to you what your empire did to us, and still does. I am asking you to challenge racism whenever you see it in the street (and the media) and call out your family members when they’re being cocks, whatever their justification for their hate (recession, snobbery, friendzoning) because excusing it the way you do, oh, they’re just working class, or unintelligent, or ignorant blah blah blah does nothing to address it but continues to perpetuate that kind of thinking.

It’s no one else’s fault if you’re a hateful, envious toad. We see you.

No, you’re the racist

britcolonialism

The way things have gone the last couple of years you could be forgiven for thinking I am the issue. I use the word white a lot and it has begun to sound like a slur in itself. I’m sure many people with white skin will stand by their belief it was all going so well till I opened my mouth but that’s bullshit and you know it. All I did was contribute to the movement that made it ok to talk about you the way you talk about us.  I am a champion for equality and whist the majority of the world suffers from a distinct lack of everything we take for granted in the west, this means sharing in their misery being as they are not permitted to share in your knowledge and material wealth. Not gonna do anything about the world in which so many people of colour are scorned for looking/speaking/thinking a little different? Well only fair we return the favour. White is not exempt from criticism or ridicule. In fact, white taught us how it was done.

colonialism

“You’re the racist, Sam”

Nah. Racism is not just about picking on people for the colour of their skin (or using the word ‘white’ unironically). It’s the perception that a group of people is inferior and therefore does not deserve access to resources which in turn justifies starving those people to death (for example). Take Churchill. Oh he provided good soundbites for white people who didn’t believe they were as important as him (perhaps as a result of all free thinking English sorts being summarily executed for speaking out against the medieval toffs and leaving behind the docile, easily manipulated underclass that jumps into action the second the ruling classes activate the kill the Pakis chip) but he also put 4 million to death by starvation, piping up only to ask if Gandhi was dead yet. What a spiffing nice chap eh?

No, what I am is not a racist. What I am is disappointed and fed up. I’m angry and disgusted. I do admit to feeling prejudice every time I see a white face the short walk from my front door into a waiting taxi. You see white people represent unchallenged violence and deception. I definitely do not trust the majority of white people. If you read up on enough history you won’t trust them either. They like to promise things in exchange for compliance and then they kill you. I am prejudiced but I do not have the power to discriminate and without that, you cannot be a bonafide racist (never mind the fact that all of my best friends are white). Racism is built on power and power allows for discrimination. When you are powerless, and even the poorest of white people have more power than non-whites, then you do not have the ability to manipulate perceptions. You do not call a single shot. Oh they’ll say you do, as they use their infinitely more powerful powers to berate and scapegoat you for all their shortcomings. They’ll say you’re a racist and that justifies an attack on your whole family, which they do in the knowledge that the white authorities will side with a white citizen no matter how deplorable or violent their attack on you. This is because white people do not see us as human. How can you empathise with an individual if you don’t even believe they feel things in the same way? I am convinced there is a connection between those assholes posing gleefully next to the carcasses of lions on safari and the kind of person who’ll justify genocide of indigenous peoples from an economic perspective. I’m sorry (not sorry) if this offends you but this is what white people do.

When I say white people are violent, it is because they are. When I say they are hypocrites, it is because they prove it again and again. If you find it difficult to understand where I’m coming then maybe breaking it down will help.

I do not have the power to refuse you a job or affect your prospects by manipulating public opinions of anyone who shares the colour of your skin.

I do not have the influence to encourage genocide of all white people (or men) in the way the architects (G8 governments) of #KillAllMuslims do.

I cannot access state support in my alleged intentions against the millions of white people I fear.

I cannot demand you identify yourself when you’re cruising around in your flash car at midnight cos you can’t sleep, or whatever.

I cannot say ‘white’ without a honky saying I’m racist.

Etc.

My words are such a threat they believe they are at risk of violence if I continue to garner support despite my using the the word ‘white’.  The reaction is so violent, so angry, white people fear you’re about to do to them what they did to you. They are so angry and violent because they believe you are capable of the same systematic monstering they subjected your ancestors to. They are still being violent and their fractured minds have justified it by labelling it survival.

It’s not survival; it’s a deadly virus, consuming all of the good it comes into contact with because ‘survival of the fittest’ means atrocity. Except I believe we’ve evolved past that and survival is no longer about being a selfish knucklehead but ensuring we do not take more than we need, from the planet and our brothers and sisters. It makes sense to maintain the life giving things by being respectful of that life force, in all its forms.

If we cannot do this, then none of us deserve to live.
